Katrina Victims Will Not Have to Vacate Trailers
The Federal Emergency Management Agency had given trailer residents like these in Port Sulphur, a deadline of May 31 to vacate or face legal action.
We have a lot to celebrate today! Thanks to you and people like you nationwide, FEMA has been forced to reverse its policy and has halted plans to evict Katrina survivors from FEMA trailers - the only home that many currently have. It will instead let those who are living in these trailers remain and purchase them for as little as $5.
Thanks to all of you who made phone calls, wrote letters and emails, and organized and attended rallies. They really made a difference. Of course, this is only a first step. We still need to keep the pressure on so that FEMA and other government agencies act to ensure that survivors get housing vouchers, employment and other resources they need in order to rebuild their homes and their lives.
One thing you can do right now to help is to email or call your Congressmember and ask them to enact the Gulf Coast Civic Works Project which would provide 100,000 jobs for residents and evacuees to rebuild gulf infrastructure.
